| E-10 Study |
[May. 12th, 2006|07:01 pm] |
Wow, I'm starting to feel old. I feel confident in my traveling and learning more every day.
I took a little trip out to the mountains the other day. My body is still covered in dirt. I'll be spending the night out there this weekend. I'm taking some humans camping. It should be a lot of fun... I'll don't know about those dirty, gravel roads, but the fresh air will be nice. I just hope I'm not stuck behind some SUV kicking dirt into my air filter.
Well, I told you I was going to get some information about E-10 gasoline. I can tell you right now, that I don't like it. I've had two fill-ups of it and I'm done. I am going to try to find normal gasoline for now.
Anyway... check out this report.
http://www.ethanol.org/documents/ACEFuelEconomyStudy.pdf
It's a simple test done by some seemingly amateur scientists in... Minnesota? Where they're from doesn't matter. They came to the conclusion that you lose 1.5% of your fuel economy with E-10 gasoline. The study seems a little flawed and they admit that, but it certainly doesn't seem that you get BETTER fuel economy. The only advantage is that E-10 gasoline can usually be purchased for a lower price and therefore can give you a lower cost/mile.
So, while the jury is still out, I'm going to stick with the non-diet gasoline. It tastes better anyway and a little fat won't kill me.
So... current statistics on that last tank of gas.
10.737 gallons @ 2.899/gallon = $31.13 Last fill up = 564 miles Odometer reading = 849 miles Distance traveled = 285 miles Cost per mile = 10.9 cents Fuel Economy = 26.5 miles/gallon Lifetime Distance = 733 miles Lifetime Fuel = 29.124 gallons Lifetime Fuel Economy = 25.2 miles/gallon |

| | None | ] | Just got a little more gas from that crazy gas station on Walker Road. You know what I noticed on the pump? "Contains 10% Ethanol." This is some kind of organic gas. I took the fill-up but then I went and did some research.
This is from www.e10unleaded.com
"E-10 Unleaded is a blend of 90% ordinary unleaded gasoline with 10% ethanol—a high-octane, clean-burning fuel made from corn and other grains. Every major car maker in the world approves the use of 10% ethanol blends (E-10 Unleaded) in their engines."
"The ethanol in E-10 Unleaded adds two to three points of octane to gasoline—helping improve engine performance while keeping engine parts cleaner. E-10 Unleaded also helps reduce toxic exhaust emissions."
So, it all seems good, right? In fact, if you browse around the pro-ethanol site, they have all kinds of reasons to buy it. But I thought I read in Popular Mechanics that the fuel economy is lower with E-10. And it seems that if it wasn't, then the pro-E-10 site would praise that fact. I'll check into it and get back to you.
Vital fuel statistics:
10.142 gallons @ 2.839/gallon = $28.79 Last fill up = 300 miles Odometer reading = 564 miles Distance traveled = 264 miles (NEW)Cost per mile = 10.9 cents Fuel Economy = 26.0 miles/gallon Lifetime Distance = 448 miles Lifetime Fuel = 18.387 gallons Lifetime Fuel Economy = 24.4 miles/gallon |

Well, I burned through the free fuel... time for my first fill up.
I stopped off on the 76 Station on Walker Road. It's known for having the best price in the area. With gas prices the way they are, I can't afford to eat the best gas all the time.
I rolled in at the 300 mile mark. I could have made it further, but it's never fun driving on an empty tank.
Anyway, vital statistics:
8.245 gallons @ 2.689/gallon = $22.17 Last fill up = 116 miles Odometer reading = 300 miles Miles traveled = 184 miles Fuel Economy = 22.3 miles/gallon Lifetime Fuel Economy = 22.3 miles/gallon
I'm rated for 22 - 30 mpg in the city. I'm young and energetic and stretching my wheels. A low mpg score will be alright for now. This was really 184 miles of totally city usage.
Well, that's all the auto news for today. |

A picture of ME!
I had some humans I know photograph me while I was still all young and (somewhat) shiny. Don't I look happy? I had a great day. It rained in the morning and then was nice and sunny in the afternoon. The only downside to the beautiful day was the miles of traffic I was stuck in for a while.
I'm almost at 200 miles. But I'm still running on the free gasoline I was born with. I need to investigate a good place for more fuel.
Nothing else for now.
Bye! |

Excellent. My own LiveJournal. This is just what I've always wanted. But this journal isn't a private journal. Obviously, you know that, because you're reading it. (Unless you think you're being sneaky. Well, you're not.)
This journal is for ME to tell YOU about my life, adventures, jokes, injuries, escapades, etc. You can call me Charlie Blue.
I am a car. I was created by Ford in the year 2006 and was born into the "real" world yesterday. That is, April 19th, 2006. Sorry, no pictures. Give a car a break, I'm only one day old! Patience... they will be along soon.
Are you wondering about mileage? Are you wondering how many times the old wheels have spun 'round. Well, they're NEW wheels and this horse only has 113 miles, so far. See, I'm just a baby.
Anyway... this journal is my voice. (FYI - Cars don't talk.) I got a lot to add to this page. I'm not a famous, exotic, speed crazy, athlete with tons of muscle. And I'm not a torque crazy, body buildin', powerhouse. I'm a simple automobile that likes shouting in capital letters on the Internet rather than blowing a lot of hot air at a stoplight.
